Obituary

Colleen Jewell, age 82 of Murfreesboro, Tennessee, formerly of Salina, Kansas, died Tuesday, December 12, 2017 at Creekside Assisted Living. She was a native of Severy, Kansas and the daughter of the late Adelbert Earl McMillen and Dorothy Elizabeth Buffalow McMillen. She was also preceded in death by her brother, Howard McMillen.

Survivors include daughters, Jamie Morgan and husband Michael of Rockvale, Tennessee, and Susan Jewell-Klema and husband Dan of Windsor, Colorado; a son, Mark Jewell and wife Ainley of Colorado Springs, Colorado; grandchildren, Taryn Davis, Jason Browne, Erin and Derek Jewell, Melody and Alex Klema, Ben Morgan; great grandchildren, Nathan Paull, Skyler, Ripley, and Trinity Cannon, and Brookelynn and Ainsley Morgan; and a host of other loving family and friends.

A devoted musician, Colleen could play most songs by ear, and "never met a melody she didn't like".

Her love for entertaining was evident in everything she did. She taught music education in both Ogden, Utah and Salina, Kansas public schools. She also directed a number of area school children's choirs and helped to form and develop two current choirs, The River Rascals and The Stang Gang in Salina, Kansas.

She began performing at a young age and was always involved in some kind of production. In junior high, she helped run a dance studio in Ellsworth, KS. During high school, she was a member of the EHS marching band and received recognition in state piano competitions for her talent. As a young mother, she played at area churches and was so dedicated that she played piano at a local dance studio to ensure her daughter Susan, could take dance lessons.

During her professional years as a music teacher, Colleen also enjoyed working with adults. She was a social and belly dance teacher at Barton Community College Out Reach during the 1980's, a fitness instructor at the YWCA, the Salina Community Theatre Director, and later in life loved her time as the Salinan Rotarians in-house music director.

She may best be known to some as Madame Muzurk of the Professor Jerusalem Webster Stiles Medicine Show, an 1880's reproduction of the age when traveling medicine shows sold "elixirs". For 13 summers, they performed at towns throughout Kansas and had a command performance at Governor John Carlins' birthday party. She was always willing to share her musical talent and the joy it brought her. Colleen thought of it as a way to make the world a happier place.

Cremation arrangements are under the direction of Woodfin Memorial Chapel, Murfreesboro, Tennessee and a memorial service will be held on January 27, 2018. Services begin at 11 am at the Salina Sunrise Presbyterian Church in Kansas where Colleen was a longtime member.
