Clarice
Nelson
February 4, 1924 – June 24, 2018
Clarice Reid Nelson, age 94, of Murfreesboro, TN, went to be with the Lord on Sunday, June 24, 2018. A native of Unionville, TN, she was preceded in death by her parents, Robert Crawford Reid and Margaret Eads Reid; husband, Harlan Bennett Nelson; and four siblings.
She is surived by her daughters, Karen Adcock and her husband Bill and Karol West and her husband Roger; grandchildren, Rachel Davis, Nelson Adcock, and Claire Lewis; great grandchildren, Dalton Grizzle, Wilson Richmond, and Abigail Adcock; sister, Elywn Flury; brothers, Gerald Reid and Bill Reid; along with many loving nieces, nephews and cousins.
Born in Awalt, Tennessee the 5th child into the family that grew to include 7 siblings. With her father being a Methodist minister, the family moved every 2 years. By the time she graduated high school she had lived in 13 towns. She recalled living in Lynchburg, TN and seeing Jack Daniels. She recalled him as "just a little man" referring to his short stature. (That's her story and we're sticking to it!) With some urging from family members she wrote a paper noting some of the history of her life. She closed with this statement "I could write more but I might get sued for slander." Always a sense of humor.
Clarice was well known for her amazing artistic abilities. Soon after relocating to Murfreesboro from Shelbyville, she and her friend Judy Pettaway worked with the Mayor of Murfreesboro to establish the Murfreesboro Art League, even managing to convince the Mayor to provide a city-owned house to be renovated for use by the new Art League. She and her family spent many evenings and weekends renovating the house for use as a meeting place as well as an art gallery to showcase local artists work. Through the years she served in many different officer positions for the Art League. She was one of the first women artists to have her own one-woman show at the Parthenon in Nashville in the mid-seventies. Her works include 5 murals at several local churches, numerous paintings sold throughout the state. For years she continued to study art as well as teaching many art classes.
She's reunited now with her beloved husband forever….as it should be.
