Obituary

CHARLES KILLIAN POPE, JR. age 87 of Murfreesboro died Wednesday March 9, 2011. He was a native of Memphis and was preceded in death by his parents, Charles Killian Pope, Sr. and Ethel Lacky Pope, and only granddaughter, Cashin Pope. Mr. Pope was a member of St. Marks United Methodist Church. He joined the Army in January of 1942 and was assigned to Third Division tank destroyer under General Pattons unit and did not return to Memphis till October of 1945. He received EAME theater ribbon with a silver star, good conduct, bronze star. After the Army he attended Memphis State College now the University of Memphis on the GI Bill. He was senior class president; president of Pi Kappa Alpha, Delta Sigma Pi, member of the Psychology Club, Vets Club and listed in Whos Who. Mr. Pope was a true Tiger Fan being season ticket holder in both football and basketball for many years and enjoyed tailgating and going on road trips. In 1952 he became the personnel director for the new E.I. DuPont de Nemours Memphis Plant until his retirement in 1982. He was active in many organizations including the Optimist Club, Mid-south Chemical Group, Athletic Club, Community Chest, and President of both the Memphis Industrial Personnel Council and Tennessee Industrial Personnel Council. He was the youngest person to receiver the James H. House outstanding personnel management award in 1965. He was fondly considered by his peers to be the Dean of Personnel in the South . After retirement he formed his own consulting firm C.K. Pope and Associates. Mr. Pope was a avid golfer and loved watching and playing golf with his grandsons, attending their ballgames, graduations, and golf tournaments. He was an active in scouting as an Eagle Scout in 1940 and assistant scout master. He is survived by his wife of 59 years Jean Moose Pope; daughter, Charlene K. Jones and husband, Charles E. Jones of Murfreesboro; son Charles Killian Pope III and wife Cathy of Charlotte North Carolina; three grandsons, Charles Killian Pope IV and wife Sarah of South Carolina, John Schaffler Pope of California, and Charles Edgar Jones Pope, Jr Skip of Murfreesboro; Memorials may be made in memory of Mr. Pope to the Tennessee Kidney Foundation; 2120 Crestmoor Rd, Nashville TN. 37215 Funeral service will be 2:00PM Sunday at Woodfin Memorial Chapel with Dr. Jim Clardy officiating.
