Obituary

Dr. Charles Lewis lost a valiant battle with cancer on December 20, 2010 at the age of 76. He died peacefully, surrounded by family at his home. Dr. Lewis is survived by his wife of 56 years, Madge McKnight Lewis. Also, he is survived by his son, Charles W. Lewis, Jr., daughters Anne Lewis Henslee (Mike), Helyn E. Lewis, and Margaret Ryan Lewis. He had five grandchildren, Katie Allen, Mary Anne Allen, Claire Lewis, Robert M. Becker, Jr., and Molly Becker. He is also survived by his sister, Jean Lewis Kemp (Garth), of Jackson, MS, nephews Michael Kemp of Shreveport, LA, Daniel Lewis Kemp of Syracuse, NY, and niece Jan Kemp Odom of Murfreesboro, TN. Other grieving relatives include Matt D. McKnight, III (Georgia) and Edward A. McKnight (Joan) and their families. Dr. Lewis was born in Martin, TN, to the late J.D. and Lottie Mae Ryan Lewis, December 28, 1933. He had a wonderful life growing up in Huntingdon, TN, where he was valedictorian of his class and captain of his high school football team at Huntingdon High School. He graduated in 1951 and immediately began his studies at the University of Tennessee in Knoxville, TN. He was a member of the Sigma Chi Fraternity, and had the highest grades in the College of Liberal Arts. He entered Medical School at the University of Tennessee in Memphis in 1953 and graduated in 1956 at the age of 22. He came to Murfreesboro to help the Public Health Department distribute the polio vaccine until his internship began at Brook Army Hospital in Ft. Sam Houston, San Antonio, TX. There, he was elected President of the Intern Class. He continued with his service in the Army Medical Corp at Ft. Polk, LA. His residency in Pediatrics began in 1959 at the University of Mississippi in Jackson. In 1961, Dr. Lewis arrived in Murfreesboro to practice Pediatrics at Murfreesboro Medical Clinic with Dr. R. James Garrison and later partners Dr. Jerry Campbell, Dr. Andy Brown, and Dr. Lisa Lowe. Dr. Lewis was a Fellow of the American Academy of Pediatrics, recipient of the Senior Pediatrician Award, and past president of the Tennessee Pediatric Society. He served as Chief of Pediatrics on several occasions, as well as Chief of Staff at MTMC. He retired in 1996 and in 2009 his greatest personal honor came when he was selected as Humanitarian of the Year by his peers in the medical community. Services will be held at St. Rose Catholic Church on Thursday, December 23, 2010, at 4 pm, with a Rosary at 3:30 pm. Reception and visitation to follow in the Jo Call Room of St. Rose.
