Obituary

Charles Jackson Dean, age 80, of Murfreesboro, TN died Wednesday, December 14, 2011 at his home. Mr. Dean was a native of Lexington, AL and was the son of the late George J. and Lutie Wilburn Dean. Funeral services will be Friday at 2:00PM at First United Methodist Church. Reverend Michael OBannon and Reverend Miriam Seyler will officiate. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery. Mr. Dean is survived by his wife, Mary Frances Fran Wright Dean; son, David Dean of Nashville; brother, Bill Dean of Old Hickory; and sister Joann Rochester of Athens, AL. Following his graduation from Lexington High School he entered college at Florence State College in Alabama. He later transferred to Vanderbilt University where he received his BA degree and BD degree from Vanderbilt Divinity School. He studied a year at Durham University in England. Mr. Dean was an ordained Methodist minister and served churches in Lawrence County TN and was former director of the Wesley Foundation at Vanderbilt University for four years. He received his MA degree from Columbia University in New York. In 1962 he was employed by the English Department at Middle Tennessee State University where he taught for 42 years. During his tenure at MTSU he took sabbatical leave to work on his PHD at Auburn University. Mr. Dean was a long time member of First United Methodist Church. Friends and family will serve as pallbearers. Memorials may be made to First United Methodist Church in Murfreesboro, TN in memory of Mr. Dean. The family wishes to thank the staff of Caris Health Care for their loving care. Visitation will be at the church Friday from 12:00 noon until service time. Woodfin Memorial Chapel is in charge of the arrangements. 893-5151
