Carl Gene "Red" Pennington , age 85 of Smyrna, TN, passed away Friday July 21, 2017. A native of Wayne, IL, he was the son of the late Guy Keith and Reva Redfren Pennington. Mr. Pennington was also preceded in death by a son, Donald Ray Pennington, a daughter, Faye Marie Brewer, a grandson, Charles "Bumps" Brewer, step-sons, Ronnie and James Mark Rice, and sisters, Maxine Pennington and Faye "Sis" Peterson.

Mr. Pennington is survived by wife, Jean Pennington; daughter, Debbie Jean (James) Averitt of Murfreesboro, TN; step-sons, Scott Rice of Smyrna, TN and Jeff (Stephanie) Rice of Nashville, TN; step-daughter, Debbie Grant of Smyrna, TN; brothers, Hershel (Deloris) Pennington of Mishawaka, IN, Paul (Vickie) Pennington of Granger, IN, Richard Pennington of  Lamar, IN, Ivan (Kenna) Pennington of Bremen, IN, Al Pennington and Keith Pennington both of Mishawaka, IN; sisters, Nadine Pennington and Lynn Stanton both of Mishawaka, IN; 16 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.

Funeral service will be 10:00 AM Monday at Woodfin Chapel, Smyrna with Rev. Edgar Boles officiating. Burial will follow in Mapleview Cemetery with Carl "Tapper" Pennington, James Averitt, Phillip "Bubba" Brewer, Jeffery J. Rice, Douglas Thompson, and Christopher Heer serving as pallbearers. Visitation will be from 3:00 PM to 7:00 PM Sunday at Woodfin Chapel, Smyrna.

Mr. Pennington was a member of Living Springs Baptist Church, a US Air Force veteran, and a retired mechanic with Tenpenny Tire Service in Smyrna.
