Carl Columbus Gilbert, age 92, of Murfreesboro, died Wednesday, May 23, 2012. He was a native of Bumpus Mills, TN and the son of the late Daniel and Mattie Wallace Gilbert. Funeral service will be 10:00am Saturday at Woodfin Funeral Chapel, Murfreesboro with Brian Gilbert, Jim Clardy, and Mike Waldrop officiating. Burial will follow in Roselawn Memorial Gardens with Full Military Honors. He is survived by his wife, Elizabeth Gilbert, son and daughter-in-law, Stephen Carl and Linda Gilbert, daughter and son-in-law, Mary Ann and Steven Fisher, all of Murfreesboro, grandchildren, Brian Gilbert, Cherry (David) Ross, Matthew (Lindsay) Fisher, and Chad (Amanda) Fisher, and four great grandchildren Reagan Rebecca Ross, Makenzie Margaret Ross, Braden Waymon Ross, and Cali Ann Fisher. He was preceded by five brothers. Mr. Gilbert was a member of the Trinity United Methodist Church. He was retired from the United States Army, United States Air Force, and the Alvin C. York VA Medical Center. He was a member of Mt. Mariah Lodge #18 F&AM. Mr. Gilbert served with the 473 Infantry Battalion Company C in North Africa and Italy during the Second World War. He was a prisoner of war for approximately four months and escape. He was wounded twice and was a Purple Heart recipient and was awarded the Bronze Star.
