Robert "Bob" Allan Granger, II, age 61 of Murfreesboro died Sunday, November 29, 2015 at Centennial Medical Center. Rumored to have been born in Innsbruck, Austria to the late Robert Granger, Jr. and Frances Brace Granger, he moved to Chicago at age five. Bob was a veteran of both the United States Navy and Marine Corps and attended Southeast Baptist Church. Bob is survived by one sister, Renee Granger Greer and many friends.
As long as his health would allow it, Bob gathered with friends at the Hardees on Middle Tennessee Blvd. In a 2011 interview in the Murfreesboro Pulse magazine, Bob talks about his life and career as a professional wrestler, travelling the world as "Mongo the Mongolian Madman" with opponents such as Jerry Lawler, The Big Show, Macho Man Randy Savage, and Hulk Hogan. He wrestled with Championship Wrestling, WWE, AWA, and NWA, holding four championship belts; IWA, NWA (a match where he defeated Ric Flair), NIWA (in Japan), and the Intercontinental title.
After retirement from the ring, Bob began entertaining diners as the band "Mongo and the Mad Bavarians" at The Gerst House, Nashville. A man of many talents, he was a five time yodeling champion, a skill thought to him by his Austrian grandmother. Many people knew Robert as a larger than life, caricature artist, who for several years could be found drawing his pictures for customers at Toot's restaurant on Broad St. In 2004, Robert lost his right arm to complications of diabetes. He then, relearned how to draw with his left hand and until his health no longer allowed, he could be found on the city square still drawing caricatures. He also hand crafted wooden ink pens and sold them at local flea markets.
A graveside with military honors will be held 10:00am Wednesday, December 9, 2015 at Middle Tennessee State Veterans Cemetery with Bro. Joe Vinson officiating. Arrangements under the direction of Woodfin Funeral Chapels.
