Obituary

Betty McCarthy Vickers, age 90 of Franklin, TN passed away on September 16, 2021. She was born in Detroit, MI to the late Ray Marshall and Elizabeth McCarthy Marshall. In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by her husband, Charles Preston Vickers, and son, Patrick Vickers.

Betty is survived by her children, Callen Vickers and wife Stephanie, Timothy Vickers and wife Pattie, Michael Vickers and wife Susan, and Deanna Vickers and husband Steve Collie; daughter-in-law, Robin Vickers; grandchildren, Kaylee Vickers, Kelsey Vickers, Kaitlyn Vickers, Kathleen Cross, Daniel Vickers, Kyle Vickers, Megan Vickers, Emma Vickers, Jarrod Vickers, Preston Vickers, Aurora Vickers, and Justina Vickers; and 4 great-grandchildren.

Betty was an outdoor enthusiast, enjoying snowmobiling, hiking, and camping. She was a member of the US Coast Guard Auxiliary, certified in large water body rescue, and was a sailboat regatta race safety and rules volunteer. She was very knowledgeable and skilled with both large and small caliber pistol and rifle firearms. She enjoyed hunting and visited Montana several times to hunt mule deer with her husband. She loved to travel and instilled this passion in all members of her family. Betty understood machine language and could write code. She used these skills in helping to develop the microcomputing department at Michigan Technological University as the computer age was unfolding. She was an extremely skilled seamstress, often making clothing for herself and for her family, including their Sunday church attire. She was a store fashion model for Hudson's department store in Detroit, and she functioned as Uber driver before Uber existed, shuttling her children to sports-related events at all hours of the day. She was unable to speak a negative word about another and was a confidant for all.

Private services will be held on Wednesday, September 22, 2021 at Woodfin Memorial Chapel. Burial will be at Evergreen Cemetery.
