Betty Hethcox McMunn

Betty Catherine Hethcox McMunn passed peacefully from this life on September 28, 2026, at the age of 80. Born in Gadsden, Alabama, on September 19, 1946, Betty was the only child of Chester and Fannie Bynum Hethcox.

Betty grew up on a farm in rural Altoona, Alabama, surrounded by many aunts, uncles, and cousins. She learned the value of hard work and caring for others early in life. After graduating from a secretarial trade school, she moved to Birmingham, Alabama. While working she met her future mother-in-law who invited her to a family dinner just before her oldest son, John, left for military service. John asked if they could be pen pals while he was away, and they eventually fell in love through their letters back and forth. John and Betty married in September 1971, and raised their family in Trussville, Alabama.

Betty was a devoted wife for 40 years until John’s death in 2011. She was also a devoted mother and grandmother. She always carried a welcoming smile, easily making friends and bringing joy to any situation. Much of her time was spent volunteering at school and with scouting in the Birmingham area. Her scouting journey led her to manage The Scout Shop in Birmingham, Alabama, for both the Greater Alabama Council and later for the national Boy Scouts of America.

She was a talented seamstress and loved crafts of all kinds. She especially enjoyed sharing her love of sewing with her granddaughter Cate.

In 2018 Betty moved to Murfreesboro, TN to be closer to her children and grandchildren. She was a faithful member of Northfield Church of Christ in Murfreesboro, where she often taught children’s Bible classes. As a child of God her faith was the cornerstone of her life.

Affectionately known as “Gran Gran” and “Gigi,” Betty leaves behind her daughter Misty Delk (Jason), son Michael (Stephanie), grandsons David Delk and Tommy Delk, granddaughter Cate Delk, and a wide circle of friends and extended family.

Her legacy of faith, hope, and love will continue in the lives of all who loved her.

Visitation with the family will be Thursday, October 1, 2026 from 4:00-6:00 PM at Woodfin Memorial Chapel. Funeral service will follow at 6:00 PM. Additional services and burial will be at Jefferson Memorial Gardens in Birmingham, Alabama.

In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made to the Wounded Warrior Project, Middle Tennessee Council of Scouting America (BSA), or the Greater Alabama Council of Scouting America (BSA).
