Barbara W. Landis of Smyrna, Tennessee, formerly of Murfreesboro passed away March 22nd at her home in Smyrna. She was born in Mars, Pennsylvania on April 3, 1930. She was the daughter of Dr. & Mrs. L.A. Walters of Butler, Pa. She graduated from Mars High School, and Carnegie Tech (Mellon) University, where she was a Chi Omega.
She worked as a secretary, teacher, and travel consultant and participated in many benevolent activities in Michigan, Pennsylvania, and Murfreesboro. She was the first woman elected to the City Council of Rogers City, Michigan. She continued to be community active after moving to Murfreesboro in 1999. She loved her church at First Cumberland Presbyterian on Main Street, the Newcomer's Club, the Art League, Lunch Bags Bridge and neighborhood friends. A lifelong Presbyterian, she served as an elder and in other positions in Cedarville and Rogers City Michigan churches and participation on committees at First Cumberland Presbyterian.
She is survived by sons Jeffry Landis of Pontiac, Michigan, Matthew (Terry) Landis, of Smyrna, and Jon Landis (Tamaki) of Pasadena, California. She also leaves siblings Dr. L.G. (Kay) Walters of Butler, Pa., Col. James L. (Mary) Walters of Portsmouth, N.H., and Gail (Tim) Potter of Artemis, Pa. She has six grandchildren; Bethany, Erin, Josh, Mari, Jake, and Zeke, seven special nieces and nephews, many cousins and a wonderful great grandson Raygan, as well as her special friend, her dog Maggie.
Her internment will be at Pigeon Lake in Bobcaygeon, Ontario, Canada. Memorial services will take place at First Cumberland Presbyterian Church On Saturday, March 26th at 11:00 a.m. Visitation will occur on Friday, March 25th from 4-8 p.m. at Woodfin Memorial Chapel in Murfreesboro and 1 hour before the funeral service on Saturday. In lieu of flowers, please make donations to the Van fund at First Cumberland Presbyterian Church, 907 E. Main St., Murfreesboro, TN, 37130.
