Lily Anne Twinning Sloan, age 59, of Murfreesboro passed away on Saturday, April 4, 2009 at Middle Tennessee Medical Center after a lengthy struggle with Cancer. She was born in Lebanon and grew up in Murfreesboro and was the daughter of the late Eugene Holloway Sloan, Sr. and Lillian White Sloan. She is survived by her husband, Steve Saunders; daughter Samantha T. Saunders, a freshman at the University of Virginia at Charlottesville, Va.; brothers Gene Sloan of Murfreesboro, Joe Sloan and his wife, Janet of Nashville and Bill Sloan and his wife, Sharon of Murfreesboro. Funeral services will be at 10 am Tuesday at Woodfin Memorial Chapel with Dr. David Young officiating. Burial in Cedar Grove Cemetery in Lebanon, Tn. Visitation with the family will be 4-7 pm Monday. Anne T. Sloan attended Campus School and was a 1967 graduate of Central High School. At the time of her passing, she held the title of Special Assistant to the Provost for International Education, a position that she assumed full-time in January 2006 at MTSU. She earned her bachelors degree from MTSU in 1971, her masters degree from Louisiana State University in 1974 and her doctorate from The Ohio State University in 1982. Before coming to MTSU, she taught at the University of South Carolina and the State University of New York at Albany. While at MTSU, she held several positions including associate dean of the College of Liberal Arts and associate professor of Political Science. She will be remembered for her curricular innovations which included the creation of courses on U. S. national security policy and comparative international politics. During her MTSU career, she taught all those courses as well as Comparative European Governments, International Relations, Foundations of Government, and the Political Status of Women in the World. She served on the committee responsible for the erection of the memorials to MTSU students, staff, and faculty who perished in military conflict. In addition to her academic achievements, She was a member of North Blvd. Church of Christ, Col. Hardy Murfree Chapter of the National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution. Active pallbearers will be John Roy Sloan, Curtis Sloan, John Bertrand, Doug Heffington, Andrei Korobkov and Mark Byrnes.
